Having settled into our new lives a bit, it is time to forge forward and see what we can create…different than what we did before. Tony and I are hoping to start working within our passions…those things that make us want to spend a gazzilion hours a day focused on the task at hand. For me it has always been my family, and my dogs (ok, our kitties too, but don’t let the canines know that.) I have some ideas for making that into my life’s work…this will be a journey starting with baby steps….and a Great Dane named Penni.
For Tony, it’s everything electronic. The irony here is…we lived in one of the most technologically supported locations in the world, Silicon Valley. Although, Tony studied and worked as an engineer in the computer industry back in the 1980’s (the most awesomest decade ever – said with a Valley Girl toneation,) he saw a great opportunity by incorporating what he knew electronically within Landscape Contracting. He dropped out of the engineering field, got his contracting license, whereby he created a great business. Now that we’ve moved to a rural area of Oregon, where technology seems a few steps behind…will he rekindle that passion into an income opportunity…only time will tell.
So, this is our journey….our time of renewing and redefining ourselves. Come along with us as we discover this place called Oregon, and this thing called life. We know what is behind us….the future is a bit less certain….that can be exciting!

You sound like us… 10 years ago. We are now settled on our little farm and after boarding horses, raising chickens and maintaining the property it has worn us (at least me) to a frazzle! Life is always changing, the important thing to remember is to know when to accept change before it turns what you love into a job. Keep things simple, that’s the best advice I can give you!

Thanks for this advice!! This is one reason we haven’t made the leap to animals on the farm besides our dogs and chickens. I think having a couple of cows to eat down the grass would be great, but that would become more limiting to our ability to leave the farm once in awhile. We haven’t gotten to the point of knowing who takes care of the farm if we go away for a few days. What do people with small farms do to get away if they have animals to care for??

Ah… they don’t. ha ha. We haven’t been on vacation for 10 years. There are pet care professionals that will come stay at your house and care for all the animals… but last I checked it was totally unaffordable. Then you have to worry that the help might leave a gate open, not feed right, or maybe not recognize a health issue. Or worse, call a farm doc out for nothing because they didn’t know how to doctor livestock in a non emergency. Having a farm no matter how small it is, will be a huge commitment. My advice to you is let somebody board their horse there… then when you go away for a couple days they’ll know how to do everything.

We have thought about opening our place up to 4-H and/or FFA…I think it would be fun.

And I, the city! Yes you are right, common sense is the key…yet there are those things like…..keeping a dry bed in livestock stalls (am I using / wasting too much straw?) …… and what about all that, uhm, poop (do I just keep making poop/mulch piles) … and now we are thinking of getting a couple of cows for beef…(HOW do you keep a stall clean with an animal THAT size…right now we have goats)….and possibly a donkey to keep with our goats….so how much straw does one need to have on hand??? Things like that perplex me…maybe I’m thinking too much!! 🙂
